Abstract

Understanding of mathematical word problems is an important thing to know because this determines students' ability to solve mathematical problems. The purpose of this study is to describe the understanding of elementary students who have low mathematical abilities on mathematical word problems. The subject of this study consisted of two elementary school students in grade V, are 1 subject with low mathematic ability and 1 subject with low mathematic ability. Data collection methods used are test and interview methods. The results of this study are in the component of interpreting understanding, the male subject tells the purpose of the problem by using the same sentence as the problem and not using mathematical symbols. While the female subject does not tell the meaning of the question either by using its own sentence or using mathematical symbols. In the component of summarizing understanding, the male subject does not summarize the sentence on the given question. Whereas female subjects summarize using their own sentences but are not complete in providing information. In the inferring component of understanding, male and female subjects have similarities, namely concluding answers according to the questions asked. In the explaining component of understanding, male and female subjects have similarities, namely not explaining the steps to solving the problem in detail, because the subject does not understand the meaning of the problem.
