Abstract

Keywords: Reading, Herringbone technique, Narrative This research is generally attempted to find the effectiveness of Herringbone technique on students’ reading comprehension at the tenth grade of SMA Negeri 1 Kamal. To know whether this technique effective or not, the researcher used pre-experimental research that applied in X-6 class. The research had been done in four meetings that were designed; first meeting was for pre-test, two meetings were for treatment, and the last meeting for post-test. As the quantitative research, the researcher analyzed data by using Paired t-test. The instrument in this research was an essay test that consist of 10 items. The population in this research was tenth grade of SMA Negeri 1 Kamal. The number of subject was 22 students. The students’ mean of pre-test was 62.27. Then in post-test, the mean score was 67.05. There were some aspects that increased on students’ reading comprehension are main idea, inference, and vocabulary. Based on the data analysis by using Analysis of Paired T-Test from SPSS 23, the result p-value was 0.000. The result of this research shows that there is a significant influence on students’ reading comprehension by using Herringbone technique on narrative text. It can be seen through the score of P-value (0.000) was lower than α (0.05). It means that alternative hypothesis was accepted and null hypothesis was rejected. Moreover, the students gave a positive feedback. The students were excited and enjoy in learning reading by using Herringbone technique. Finally, the researcher concluded that teaching reading by using Herringbone technique on narrative text was quite successful. The researcher expects that this strategy was effective to be applied in reading learning process.
